Student Mentorship Program
Fact: Less than 20% of engineers graduating from the University of Saskatchewan registered as an Engineer-in-Training with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Saskatchewan. Where are our students going?
"If you want to have engineers in Saskatchewan to employ in the future, then you and your company better start participating in the mentorship program NOW!" (SES President)
Mentorship is important to encourage people to stay in an engineering career in Saskatchewan. If students never find out that they can work on interesting stuff here, then those offers from Calgary and the United States will look even more enticing.
MENTORSHIP PROGRAM FOR U. of S. STUDENTS
The Student Development Committee has discussed opportunities for creating closer links between the students at the University of Saskatchewan (U of S) and the members of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists (APEGS). This is an extension of a mentorship program that was created by the U of S students two years ago. The U of S program has been supported by alumni who are now working in Calgary. Most of the mentors are located outside of Saskatchewan and are not members of APEGS. We do not wish to detract from the existing program, but wish to supplement it by expanding the pool of mentors to include engineers and geoscientists in Saskatchewan.
The mentors will be linked with a requesting student and information about each other will be forwarded to both the mentor and the student. The mentor will be requested to contact the student (e-mail is usually the easiest way to start the process) to arrange to get together and discuss opportunities. The mentor will be asked to share experiences that may be helpful for the student who is working toward a career as a Professional Engineer or Professional Geoscientist. This may include assistance with access to resources such as corporate libraries for student projects, industry contacts, or even invitations to social activities where the student can mingle with professionals. The student and the mentor should work out a relationship that matches their resources, time availability, and interests.
If you are interested in enhancing a student's understanding of the profession, please contact the SES and request a Mentor Application Form. The forms can be sent to you by mail, fax, or e-mail.
Thank you for your support for the future of Engineering and Geoscience in Saskatchewan. |
